The Calvary Chapel Movement was founded by Pastor Chuck Smith in 1965 in Costa Mesa, California. The "Hippie Movement" was in full swing in Southern California so he broke convention and took the Gospel message to the hearts of the youth in the counter-culture; hippies, drug addicts, and those not accepted by the other churches of the day. Pastor Chuck saw an amazing transformation of delinquents and aimless young people into individuals on fire for God. As they grew in the Lord, he saw the need to plant other churches and knew that God wanted to use these "on fire" young people to be the new leaders.

The Calvary Chapel Movement broke many traditions, creating a very relaxed atmosphere of worship. Fifty years later, with well over 1000 affiliate churches ministering to approximately 400,000 people.

Calvary Chapel is best known for our strong emphasis on the teaching of God's Word and the application of the Word to every day life. Our philosophy is to teach through the Word of God systematically. We feel this is far more productive, and allows the full counsel of God's Word to work in the hearts of the people so we abide with this style of teaching. With few exceptions, we start a book of the Bible and continue verse-by-verse until we finish the book.

"We believe the Lord has given us a strong vision that's totally reliant upon the Word of God, His direction and the moving of the Holy Spirit. We desire to see lives changed so that people would become less independent and more God dependent."

what we believe

We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God. We believe that it is the final authority, is without error, and is applicable for our daily lives.

(2 Tim 3:16)

We believe in one God who exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We believe in God as creator and sustainer of all things. We believe that God is eternal, holy, and loving.

(Genesis 1:1; Matthew 28:19)

We believe that man was created in the image of God and was designed to be in loving relationship with God. We believe that because of man’s sinful disobedience, mankind was separated from the loving intimacy that God intended. We believe that mankind’s greatest and deepest need is to be forgiven of sin and restored back into right relationship with God and thus fulfill his ultimate purpose which is to worship God and fully enjoy Him forever.

(Genesis 1:26-30; Genesis 2:7; Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:9)

We believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and second member of the trinity. We believe that Jesus willingly came into our world as fully man, while continuing to be fully God. We believe that Jesus lived a completely sinless life on our behalf, died a sinners death in our place, physically rose from the dead declaring victory over sin and death, and ascended to heaven where He is currently seated at the right hand of God as our advocate and intercessor.

(Luke 1:35; Matthew 3:17; 1 Peter 2:24; Luke 24:46-47; Romans 8:34; Hebrews 12:2)

We believe that salvation comes through the repentance of our sins and by believing upon the person and work of Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus’ sinless life makes us righteous before God and His substitutionary death removes all our sin and establishes our eternal security. We believe that salvation cannot be earned or purchased and can only be received as a free gift from God.

(Romans 5:1; John 2:1-2; Romans 10:9; Ephesians 2:8)

We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third member of the trinity. We believe that the Holy Spirit enters the life of a person when they accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We believe that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is essential for and evidence of a person’s salvation. We believe that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement. We believe that the Holy Spirit gives gifts for serving one another and empowers believers to live holy and effective lives for the glory of God.

(John 16:8-11; Acts 2:38; Romans 8:9; 1 Peter 4:10)

We believe that the church consists of those who believe upon Jesus as Lord and Savior. We believe that the church is one body with many members, unified through faith in Jesus. We believe that the church is called to gather together regularly for fellowship, teaching, prayer, and communion. We believe that the church exists to continue the work of Jesus by declaring the gospel, making disciples, and demonstrating God's love to the world.

(Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:41-47; Acts 20:28; Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 12:27)

We believe that people were created with both body and soul. We believe that after the body dies, the soul of a person continues on into eternity. We believe that heaven is the eternal destination for all people who have placed their faith and hope in the person and work of Jesus Christ. We believe that a literal hell is the eternal destination for those who have rejected Jesus as their Lord and Savior. We believe that the day is coming when Jesus will judge both the living and the dead.

(1 Peter 1:3-5; Philippians 3:20; 1 Peter 4:5; 2 Timothy 4:1)
